Passionflower: An Anti-Anxiety Herb

Passionflower (Passiflora Incarnata) helps you feel calm. It’s a super-mild plant supplement that relieves anxiety and restlessness while leaving you clear-headed. We here at Think Drinks are not the first ones to notice this: humans have used Passionflower as a treatment for anxiety and insomnia since prehistoric times. These days, many scientific studies back up what we know from centuries of use: Passionflower is great at putting you at ease. What is Passionflower? There are many Passionflower species, but most research has been about the type called Passiflora Incarnata, so that is the one we use. The Passionflower plant is a striking pink and purple, which is why you have probably heard people call it wild apricot, wild passion vine, purple passionflower, or maypop. It’s native to Australia, and it’s common in the southern part of the United States, which is why it is the official wildflower of the state of Tennessee. It grows to be about 10 m, and people sometimes think it looks like it has a crown on top. To make the supplement, you grind up the plant’s leaves, seeds, flowers, and stamps into a tea, extract, or tincture. In our case, we then add that mixture to Anxiedote at an amount that studies suggest will get the best results (700-1000 mg).

How Does Passionflower Help You?

Researchers have been studying Passionflower for a long time. However, a lot of exciting studies about Passionflower have come out over the last few decades. For example, Passionflower has been tested in stressful situations, like having dental surgery or spinal anesthesia. Those studies found that Passionflower does just as good of a job as prescription drugs at helping people stay calm during nerve-racking experiences. It's also been tested as a treatment for day-to-day anxiety. For example, one study tested Passionflower as a way to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (for more on GAD, check out the “What is Anxiety?” section of this site). Passionflower was found to be super effective at helping people who had been diagnosed with anxiety to feel better. That’s only the start—we provide more studies below. A lot of research shows that Passionflower, particularly at the dose we provide, is a safe and effective way to feel less anxious.

How Does Passionflower Work?

Passionflower contains flavonoids that slow the overactivity in your brain that happens when you are anxious. Researchers have suggested that the chemicals in Passionflower act like the GABA molecule. GABA binds to brain cells in a way that slows down communication with overactive parts of your brain. That’s why a lot of medicines that help people relax focus on GABA.
