Promoting a positive State-of-Mind

L-Theanine

A Meditative Supplement that Relaxes Your Mind

L-theanine puts you in a meditative and relaxed state of mind, hushing anxiety and helping you focus. Chances are that you and L-theanine are old friends. You know that relaxed but energized feeling you get after drinking a cup of tea? A big part of that is L-theanine at work. What exactly is L-theanine? It’s an amino acid that is mostly found in tea leaves (Camellia sinensisx). In the 1950s, scientists in Japan figured out how to extract it from the leaves, so now we can put it in other drinks. Of the two types of Theanine (γ-glutamylethylamide), L and D, L-theanine is the more common. Long before we at Think Drinks sang L-theanine’s praises, poets and yogis celebrated tea as a tranquil source of energy. Monks have used it for centuries to help concentrate during marathon meditation sessions. Science now tells us that the poets, yogis, and monks were on to something: L-theanine puts you in a calm and alert—almost meditative—state of mind that is free from anxiety. A cup of black tea contains about 20 mg of L-theanine, but the research tells us that 200 mg gets the best results in relieving anxiety. Rather than suggesting that you drink ten cups of tea at a time, we figured we would just put the scientifically verified, ideal amount in Anxiedote (200 mg).

How Does L-Theanine Help You?

L-theanine helps you to achieve the worry-free state of mind that some people call being “in the zone” and other people call the flow state. That’s one of the reasons that tea has always been so popular with people who do creative work. Studies have tested L-theanine in a lot of settings, and they all point out that anxiety and L-theanine don’t get along. For example, L-theanine has been found to ease the anxiety of doing math in your head or seeing an unpleasant picture. On a physical level, it lowers heart rate, cortisol levels, and other signs of stress. It’s even been found to help anxious boys with ADHD relax and sleep better. L-theanine wasn’t invented yesterday, and there are a ton of great studies out there on all the ways it can help you. Check out the section below for links, short summaries, and fun facts.

How Does L-Theanine Work?

Researchers are still figuring out exactly how L-theanine works its magic, but they point to a few known causes. One reason is that L-theanine causes alpha waves in the brain. The brain is always producing little electrical signals on its surface. Alpha waves are the type of brain wave produced by activities that are creative and restful, such as yoga and painting. Another reason is that L-theanine acts like glutamate, which is a neurotransmitter that is related to stress and memory. Glutamate speeds up the electrical firings in your brain, which can make you feel stressed. L-theanine slows down that hyper pace, so you can feel less anxious and more relaxed.
