Lemon Balm: A Refreshing and Relaxing Herb

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a refreshing solution for anxiety. An Arabian proverb states that “Balm makes the heart merry and joyful.” At Think Drinks, we wholeheartedly agree that Lemon Balm is the perfect way to encourage anxiety relief. Lemon Balm is an herb and a member of the mint family, and its leaves resemble those of the mint plant. Its flowers are typically white or pale pink, and they smell like lemon when they are ground up, which is how the plant gets its name. The supplement is made of the plant’s ground up leaves, which are then put in drinks or on your skin. Some people make an essential oil out of it. Lemon Balm has been used as an anxiety treatment for a long time—thousands of years (literally). It was a popular cure for anxiety during the Middle Ages, and, even before that, people would add it to wine to help them relax. Amazingly, the earliest recorded use of Lemon Balm to treat anxiety is from 300 B.C. That’s a long history, and on top of that, we now have many exciting scientific studies that tell us exactly how great Lemon Balm is at making you feel better. We give you a breakdown of some of our favorite studies below. As it turns out, they agree with the ancient thinkers in concluding that Lemon Balm is an upbeat and super safe way of promoting relief from anxiety. At Think Drinks, we are thrilled to include Lemon Balm in Anxiedote at the perfect dose of X mg as a lively way to help you feel better.

How Does Lemon Balm Help You?

Many ancient sources called Lemon Balm the “elixir of life” and prescribed it as a treatment for seemingly almost every problem—even baldness. While current scientific evidence doesn’t quite call Lemon Balm the elixir of life, it does support the idea that Lemon Balm is an invigorating way to encourage anxiety relief (though we don’t make any promises about hair growth). Lemon Balm is great for everyday anxiety. It even reduces physical symptoms like high blood pressure and chest pain. Beyond the everyday stuff, Lemon Balm has proven to be an effective support for people facing stressful challenges like being in the hospital because of severe burns or experiencing some of the setbacks that can stem from old age. Everyone likes feeling relaxed; no one likes feeling groggy. It’s worth pointing out that, just like every ingredient we include in Anxiedote, Lemon Balm relieves anxiety without making you feel sedated or tired. Interested in learning more? How Does Lemon Balm Work?

Researchers now think that Lemon Balm treats anxiety by raising the GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) levels in your brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that helps to slow the pace of electrical messages in your brain. When you’re feeling anxious, the electrical firings in your brain speed up. However, with increased GABA, that speed is slowed down and you feel less tense and stressed. How does Lemon Balm do that? It slows down an enzyme called GABA-T, which breaks down GABA. The result is that after ingesting Lemon Balm, you have more GABA in your brain because one of the things that breaks down GABA is working more slowly than usual. The result is that Lemon Balm leaves you feeling revived and less keyed up.
